Cutting Edge Cottage

When MHK Architecture & Planning began, the firm undertook many renovations of Old Florida cottages. They made use of that experience to create an updated look for that classic beach cottage style, which became wildly popular under their creative direction. With this home in Naples, MHK took yet another step into the area’s architectural future and designed a modern cottage with a beach house twist.

Paula Myette, senior lead designer for Freestyle Interiors, was delighted to be working on, “a home with a little different design aesthetic than what has come to dominate Naples’ architectural design.”

“Being able to introduce industrial elements into the interior design of this home was a fun and refreshing change,” says Myette. “Introducing shots of black throughout the interior tied in with the window and entry door selections and worked so well with MHK’s design. Together we created a unique and stunning home with a new, modern feel.”

Admitting she pours her heart into her projects, Myette sees every home as she sees every client. “Each is unique and their home should reflect that,” she explains. “At Freestyle Interiors, each project and client gets that specialized attention and it is always an exciting collaboration.”

“We created a warm, impressive street presence. We anchored the elevation with a three-story stair tower, but stepped the entry down to give the home a more pedestrian scale,” explains Steven Jallad, Director of Residential Design for MHK. “Cut stone on the front exterior and the metal roof add to the beachy ambiance, but what truly makes it a classic Florida ‘cottage’ are the fantastic western views of the Gulf seen from every major room, and the fact that inside rooms open seamlessly to the outside.”

Even though this is new construction, Jallad wanted to maintain the Old Naples roots to which this home owes its pedigree. Though MHK has long been known as experts at this type of timeless design, Jallad also enjoyed stretching his creative muscles a bit. He says, “Putting a slightly different spin on this home and working with such a talented designer made this project a joy.”

A tray ceiling, featuring tongue-and-groove cypress stained to match the floor, sets an impressive tone in this comfortable great room. A Century sofa upholstered in a neutral linen fabric and a grouping of Hickory White Silhouette chairs, covered in a soothing cream and tan textured fabric, are gathered around the Vanguard coffee table. Matching end tables, with brass bases, are topped with travertine. Slate blue glass lamps are by Arteriors. The Old Biscayne Designs sofa table has a walnut finish. The attention-grabbing accent wall, hosting a linear Spark fireplace, is clad in Skyline polished marble and is flanked by custom built-ins of stained walnut, backed in crackled cork paper by Kravet.

The inviting dining room has a Hickory Chair table of solid wood in a distressed French Gray finish. Myette chose seating for eight in a slate blue herringbone fabric from Vanguard Furniture that mimics the kitchen’s subway tile. Hanging from the geometric tray ceiling is a brushed gold chandelier by Currey & Company. Wall art is by Leftbank Art. Stools in elmwood and black iron from Furniture Classics can be pressed into service as extra seating. Custom cabinetry by Kitchens by Clay, in a soft white with black metal hardware, provides contrast to the hand-made Indigo Gloss tiles, installed in a herringbone pattern. A trio of black pendant lights with antique brass accents by Uttermost shine down upon the island of stained walnut. The countertops are Pompeii Statuario quartz. The flooring, as through much of the home is of wide plank European oak. Appliances are Sub-Zero and Wolf from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. The range hood is by Bertazzoni.

The vaulted ceiling features both beam and cypress tongue-and-groove detailing to add simple majesty to this retreat-like master bedroom. The four-poster bed from Universal is brushed brass with a sable velvet headboard. Oak nightstands and dresser with antique gold hardware are from Century. The carved mirror is by Bernhardt. A Vanguard chair upholstered in cozy chenille with nailhead accents, and a Vanguard bench in a soft gray-green textured fabric, sit atop a geometric rug by Surya.

A touch of urban grit is added to the master bath by use of this unique subway tile, Iris Ceramica, in the glass shower. The rest of the shower and the bathroom’s floor are Kronos porcelain tiles which emulate concrete. Two wall-mounted showerheads, a rain shower, and a handheld fixture in satin bronze are by Newport Brass from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. The freestanding rectangular Stargaze tub is from Kohler. Soft green-gray walls are courtesy of Sherwin-Williams Magnetic Grey. An espresso-stained cabinet by Kitchens by Clay has a Pompeii Statuario quartz countertop and Newport Brass fixtures and a custom backlit mirror hangs above.

A mushroom-colored grass cloth by Kravet backs a pair of brass sconces in this powder bath. An Uttermost mirror, with a thick metal strap in antique gold leaf, complements the sconces. The dark-stained floating cabinet has a counter and high industrial era backsplash of Pompeii Statuario Quartz. Satin bronze fixtures from Newport Brass service the Kohler vessel sink. The stunning floor is a stone mosaic, Astral Night, of ash gray honed stones.

Barn doors painted black and inset with antique mirrors open to the sophisticated study. A writing table from Stanley Furniture creates the perfect workspace when paired with the ebony chair by Jessica Charles. A black metal media console by Four Hands sports brass knobs and above it hang three giclée prints in custom floating frames from Leftbank Art. The Averline Lounge Chair by Hickory Chair and a vintage brass side table by Bernhardt welcome visitors. All sit atop a chunky wool and jute rug.

This new take on a classic Florida beach cottage features bold industrial touches like a three-story stair tower to anchor the roof line, a statement front door, and the use of black finishes on windows, doors, railings, and balconies. The circular driveway and landscaping designed by Architectural Land Design softens the sharp angles prevalent in the front elevation. The house boasts five bedrooms, five full baths and two half-baths, and 5,083 square feet under air.

Barlow Tyrie Sling chaises line the pool and sit atop the deck made of Ocean Stone Tan porcelain pavers by Kronos USA. The pool features Lunada Bay 1×1 Bari Silk mosaic glass tiles in beiges, soft browns, and blues. Black window frames and the overlooking balcony recall the industrial theme of the home.
