Southwest Florida : Home Tour : Heightened Senses

As crisp and cool as a well-shaken martini, this British bachelor’s elegant condominium would have suited James Bond himself. In the Aria high-rise on Naples’ Gulf Shore Boulevard understated luxury and classic good taste are evident in every inch of the three-bedroom, two-and-one-half bath residence, with its spectacular near 360-degree panoramic view of Naples Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.

Interior Designer Roz Travis of Roz Travis Interiors began with the idea of redesigning only the kitchen, but was soon given carte blanche by the owner and, from that point on, the walls came tumbling down. The fully remodeled design accentuates a phenomenal panorama and contemporary style.

“I wanted to maximize the fantastic views and convey a sense of luxury and sanctuary by choosing only the very best in textures, finishes, furnishings, and accessories,” explains Travis. “The quiet elegance of this design best reflects the personality of the owner himself.”

In the great room, Travis made the most of the awe-inspiring view by having the lanai removed to widen this room, as well as dressing down the furnishings to their elemental best. Four matching Barcelona leather chairs from Knoll flank an asymmetrical Noguchi-style coffee table, with its signature glass top and walnut base. Two minimalist walnut Minotti “Kiaji” accent tables from Casa Italia flank the couch, upholstered in soft grey silk with hints of aqua. An abstract painting, commissioned by Travis, adds a spot of color and the curved glass sofa table, upon which rests a crystal bowl with silver rim, brings a touch of sparkle. The silver and chrome Arc lamp, also from Casa Italia, provides the perfect evening reading illumination. Throughout the residence, silk and wool rugs, in cool shades of grey and aqua, delineate separate spaces on the dark walnut wood floor.

The kitchen, fully open to the dining and living rooms, features sleek high-buff custom cabinetry by AlliKristé Custom Cabinetry & Kitchen Design in soft white and grey tones, with a gloss finish that serves to reflect and enhance the fabulous Gulf view. The custom suspended countertop is made of solid walnut with a 1” thick starphire glass inlay, uplit for drama, which plays host to comfortable low profile cream leather stools.

“This glamorous kitchen is calm, cool, and contemporary,” describes AlliKristé’s Senior Marketing Director, Pattie Hus. “Great living spaces like this begin with innovative design and end with excellent and professional service—AlliKristé delivers both.”

A structural column has become a work of art in the space, sporting a Best Cirrus ceiling mounted hood, perfect for open-living style as it allows uninterrupted sightlines. Cristallo quartz, that Travis calls “the Rolls Royce of quartz,” adds an extra glimmer to the room. The countertops and backsplash are also made of this rare and lovely material. The appliances used are first-class, supplied by Florida Builder Appliances: A Sub-Zero 36” built-in refrigerator, with a custom panel, blends into the other cabinetry. A 36” frameless Wolf induction cook top uses innovative technology to stay as responsive as a gas cooktop. A 36” Wolf oven, Miele dishwasher and Sub-Zero wine unit, the ultimate in preservation of the finest vintages, completes the appliance package. The soft glow of the ceiling lights are reflected in every polished surface of this glamorous culinary space.

“We provide the finest home appliances, knowledgeable staff and attentive service,” explains Marisa Urquides, Senior Marketing and Planning Manager for Florida Builder Appliances. “Our cooking, cooling, and cleaning appliances are an asset to our clients’ residences,” adds Urquides.

The master suite includes a stylish dressing room flanked by grey lacquer closets that conform to the curve of the walls. A lacquered walnut vanity, with drawers lined in ostrich, shares the space with a large custom leather ottoman. Polished walnut flooring leads into a lavish master bath, the floor of which is a slab of onyx. Onyx mosaic tiles form a wide waterfall pattern behind the freestanding tub. Well-designed lighting illuminates this area and creates a soft glow of glamour. An interesting feature is the suspended horizontal mirror over the angled trough sink.

The master bedroom, accessed through opaque sapphire glass doors, features a wall covering of textured silk with a grey and cream wave stripe. A large abstract painting echoes the straight lines of the room. The Minotti “Alison” bed from Casa Italia is crafted of black lacquered wood and Tortora leather and clad in oatmeal-toned raw silk Ann Gish linens. Two Minotti “Harvey Line” stone and grey lacquered night stands, on either side of the bed, continue the simple geometric theme. The horizontal seascape hung above the bed provides a pop of soft marine color. “Minotti is about designing a lifestyle – one of sophistication, grace and exquisite elegance, combined with comfort and long-lasting quality,” states Ozzie Pancaro, owner of Casa Italia-Minotti Showrooms. Silvia Pancaro, Minotti showroom manager, notes further, “Roz Travis chose Minotti furnishings that accentuated the clean & timeless elegance of the interior design space.”

The family room features a custom sectional upholstered in light taupe chenille. Silk patterned pillows of stylized sea urchins add to the subtle maritime theme that Travis has introduced. “I used shades of ocean blue, off-white, light grey, and sand throughout to tie in with the enchanting views of the Gulf,” describes Travis.

An abstract painting provides counterbalance to the media center, which is slightly angled, as is the custom coffee table of Anigre walnut. This helps to balance the curves of the room’s walls. Architects Dyehouse & Comeriato, chose to highlight the crown molding which provides a soft glow that can be seen at night from the boulevard below.

“The key to the beauty of this home is the exquisite detail throughout,” stresses Travis. “Nothing is overdone. Everything is elegant. The design is urban and classic—transporting in its simplicity.”
