Southwest Florida : Home Tour : Curb Appeal

Located in the Moorings, this elegant West Indies inspired home has been created to make an impact. Impressive exterior features such as wood stained brackets around the roof, a natural stone entry, and a beautiful display of plantings, create curb appeal and an inviting overall presence. The home’s powerful presentation is the result of a dynamic collaboration of industry professionals, each with an intricate knowledge of what today’s homeowner is seeking.

“I have been building my entire life, and every time I complete a project I feel this sense of accomplishment and reward, knowing I have built someone’s dream home,” says Builder Matt Knauf from the Knauf–Koenig Group. Developed as a speculative project without a specific owner in mind, decisions had to be made that would appeal to a wide audience. “We wanted a home that had a timeless design that would reflect the ‘new traditional’ of today’s lifestyle,” says Rhett Josey, Interior Designer for Clive Daniel Home. Working alongside design partner Chad Elkins, Josey chose to use an organic coastal aesthetic and energy as the driving force behind the project. “Our background selection allowed the homeowner/developer the creative direction they needed for the project,” describes Elkins, also of Clive Daniel Home. As a true testament to the design team, the day after all the furnishings were installed, a contract was written on the property.

Weathered woods, easy, comfortable upholstery, and soft tones popped with watery hues fill the great room. Recessed based Saratoga sofas, designed by Thom Filicia for Vanguard Furniture, are linen, cotton and wool in a neutral sand-colored fabric juxtaposed with navy mohair and sea glass-covered raw-silk. A weathered driftwood coffee table by Caracole is unique in that it actually has a leaf allowing it to be extended for entertaining. The splendid, vaulted ceiling is tongue-and-groove cypress wood with a custom stain. Beautiful jade-toned Murano glass balls sitting atop a zigzag bookcase from Noir, introduce a pleasing, yet subtle, contrast.

Of course, every room’s design starts with the optimal canvas. To achieve a remarkable backdrop for these fine furnishings, designers turned to the artisans at Legno Bastone for a breathtaking European white oak flooring. This organic, luxury product is designed to be distinctive—no two floors are the same. “We start with a custom smoking process that brings the natural tannin in the wood to the surface—then apply a blended oil by hand,” describes Arturo Guido, Principal of Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring. The addition of a hand-tufted New Zealand wool rug creates the perfect anchor to the room, unifying everything without being busy. But the area’s exclamation mark comes from the distinctive, silver-leaf, metal drum shade hanging above the sofas. “This Worlds Away chandelier accentuates the room just as a lovely necklace highlights a beautiful woman,” adds Josey.

In the kitchen, the glass accents are stronger and deeper in color to incorporate the citron and blue/green tones from the great room pillows. Sea Pearl Quartzite countertops from Classic Stone offer the translucence of jade, giving the counters the appearance of semi-precious stones. But beauty isn’t the only thing this high-end kitchen offers, it also delivers supreme functionality. The home boasts eye-catching additions such as a 36” dual-fuel range and 48” built-in Sub-Zero refrigerator. The room’s fully integrated, duel-zoned wine storage unit will hold up to 136 bottles of wine at exact temperatures—readying the homeowner for a full-scale party at a moment’s notice. And just to make sure this home is literally “cooking with steam,” the kitchen is outfitted with one of the hottest appliances on the market today-—a convection steam oven. “The convection steam oven from Wolf is fantastic for healthy cooking, reheating, defrosting and slow cooking. They are quickly becoming a staple for high-end kitchens,” says Gregory Bennett from Ferguson Enterprises.

The palatial master bathroom is designed to indulge. Opulent marble flooring combined with the sparkle and shine of an elaborate chandelier, add glamour to the spa-like space. All cabinetry in the home was custom-fitted for each area by Ruffino Cabinetry in their state-of-the-art factory located in Fort Myers. “The cabinetry was styled with transitional detailing in order to keep the look very clean and timeless,” says Stephen Christopher Ruffino, the company’s vice president. The room’s grand style shower features a vertical racetrack waterfall that races across the shower floor and up the opposite wall. Accent tile consists of tumbled limestone with metal inserts, adding visual appeal.

The master bedroom comes to life with the use of a unique bed by Noir that offers a contemporary take on the spindle bed. To further encourage the room’s pampering properties, a sensuous silk and viscose rug adds softness and texture. Luxurious linens from Mario & Marielena adorn the bed and reflect an ethereal presence.

“The study is my favorite room in the house because of the scale of the room and the incredible light that streams in the windows in the late afternoon,” says Josey. To fill the room, designers chose a limed wood Bento desk by Artistica with vintage lamps flanking each side. Above it hangs an original oil painting of a horse that is both provocative and alluring. The exterior windows are trimmed out with custom-milled trim to match the interior door. An ikat fabric upholstered cocktail ottoman is grouped in front of a linen sofa by Fairfield with large nail heads spaced 3” apart. Welded chain-link lamps with burlap shades add interest, while the room’s rug offers more geometric shape and dimension.

Of course, true Florida living wouldn’t be complete without an emphasis on the outdoors. “We orientated the pool so that when you open the front door you instantly feel relaxed and on vacation by looking down the beautiful pool with ocean blue water,” says Knauf. The pool and spa, designed by Pinnacle Pools, are accompanied by fully equipped outdoor living and dining areas—complete with fireplace and recessed TV niche. “Creating a sense of place for the homeowner is crucial as we bring the outside in,” adds Elkins. Lloyd Flanders outdoor furniture was chosen for its clean lines that don’t compete with the deep hues of the pool’s brilliantly colored tile. The end result is an extraordinary home with mass market appeal.
