Classically Comfortable : A Family Home With Style

When a prominent builder constructs his own family’s house, you can guarantee it will be something special, and this spectacular home in Old Naples does not disappoint. Designed by architect Matthew Kragh of MHK Architecture & Planning, the 4,100 square foot family home built by Waterside Builders features five bedrooms and seven baths with a detached guest wing.

“Our team has been dubbed by locals as the builders who are creating the ‘new Old Naples’,” says Kragh. “This house is a perfect example of that. It represents a new way of living; promoting a modern lifestyle through indoor/outdoor spaces and open volumes while still respecting the past and our old Naples roots. This architecture will stand the test of time.”

The interior was designed by Jett Thompson of Jett Thompson Antiques & Interiors, who relished the idea of creating a casual enough atmosphere for the young couple and their eight-year-old twins while indulging the wife’s — and Thompson’s own — love of antiques.

“She was raised in the Deep South in a house filled with lovely antiques and touches of Southern charm and wanted to replicate that feeling here,” says Thompson. “We were simpatico in wanting to create something classical, yet comfortable. I call it adding a little ‘high heel’ to the home”.

The sectional sofa, covered with Pewter Verellen outdoor fabric, and a wave glider clad in a nubby oatmeal slipcover rest on a sisal rug. A standing lamp made out of an old ship’s chain and a macramé occasional table adds interest. The throw pillows are made from a fabric imported from Uzbekistan. A pottery piece from French artist Will Guhley, acquired by the owners on their travels, holds an honored place on the reclaimed wooden coffee table. A 1940s Asian urn hosts a handkerchief planter, marrying the indoors to the out in this room open to the pool and outdoor living area.

Soaring white ceilings, highlighted by dark wooden beams, bring a nautical feel to the room while honoring the owners’ wishes to avoid anything too coastal. An elegant French chandelier hangs above the seating group comprised of white couches cleverly upholstered in slipcovers of white Verellen outdoor linen, easy-to-wash for those inevitable kid-caused spills. Blue velvet occasional chairs and an acrylic-topped coffee table share the lovely distressed rug in shades of indigo, creams, and tans. Moroccan mirrors add height above twin antique chests on either side of a concealed television above the marble-fronted fireplace.

Local artisan Ed Kohler created the custom chandelier, made to replicate tree branches, inset in a ceiling alcove above the reclaimed wooden dining table. Slipcovered chairs and stools are covered in washable Sunbrella “Sea Salt” fabric, and the bright coral rattan high-backed end chairs add color. Also visible is an antique wooden Asian buffet underneath the television and a simpler minimalist iron chandelier illuminating the seating area adjacent to the dining room. The light toned wood floors by Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring run throughout the home.

‘Taj Mahal’ marble from Coastal Stone was chosen for the countertop, backsplash, and island, offering a trio of seating via linen covered stools. Ruffino Cabinetry custom designed the dove white Shaker-style illuminated cabinetry accented with French wire. Clear glass and chrome pendants give the chef plenty of light. A sturdy barn door opens to the butler’s pantry, which features a large wine cooler, espresso machine, mirrored glass cabinets, and a Moorish star chandelier. High end appliances by Monark Premium Appliance Company complete the kitchen.

A glass bead and metallic chandelier from Currey & Company adorns the master bath, made practical by the addition of dual soft driftwood vanities with marble tops by Ruffino Cabinetry. Oversized custom mirrors are lit by inset vintage-inspired metal and parchment sconces. An oval soaking tub and the wood and sparkling stone vanity stool add a hint of glamour.

Kravet fabric in cerulean, gold, and copper tones grace the louvered French doors and matching bolster pillow in the master bedroom. A hand-forged, dark bronze canopied frame provides a showcase for the faux fur throw and Ann Gish washable silk bed linens, hospitable to children and the family dogs. A set of peacock blue slipper chairs, dark gray wooden chests with metallic pulls and octagonal crystal table lamps add a hint of luxury while a “Pueblo” sisal rug brings geometric interest.

The couple’s little boy is fascinated by anything to do with boats, particularly pirate ships, and his room reflects that passion. An antique chest holds a vessel worthy of Long John Silver and sits beneath an iron porthole mirror. Vintage Coast Guard signal flags are framed on the wall that also sports antique oars. Serena & Lily beds in washed blue wood hosting purposefully mismatched bedding are separated by an English pine cricket table serving as a nightstand. A French laundry basket proves a shipshape home for errant toys and a Dash & Albert rug gives a patriotic touch.

A slipcovered seating group is anchored by Dash & Albert striped ottomans and placed around a dramatic teak root table. Pillows are by Dransfield & Ross and the Belgian windowpane mirror reflect the Southwest Florida sky. Cool nights are tamed by an outdoor fireplace clad in sparkling granite subway tiles.

Coral striped cushions by Lacefield Designs flank the outdoor fire pit. Across the pool is an outdoor dining area with seating for ten. The table features a huge lazy susan, making entertaining an easy proposition.

The stormwater management system incorporated into the landscape design provides hidden and functional flood protection, designed by J.R. Evans Engineering.
