Beauty Underfoot

Living the Southwest Florida lifestyle means spending as much time outdoors as possible—enjoying the unbeatable weather, watching the Technicolor sunsets and having drinks with friends around the pool. Comfortable seating, a convenient outdoor kitchen, and lush landscaping all help set the scene, but another element helps tie our lanai rooms together—outdoor rugs. Combining luxurious colors and patterns with rugged durability melds our outdoor and indoor spaces together into one seamless space.

Dismiss from your mind those astro-turf compositions that used to pass for outdoor carpets. Today’s outdoor rugs are not just about wiping wet feet, but adding color and style to an entire outdoor design scheme.

The colors of our Montego collection were inspired by the fresh, bright hues of nature.

Outdoor rugs are most often made of polypropylene—a man-made petroleum based synthetic fiber that is incredibly strong, hold color well and is resistant, not only to stains, but water damage, mold, rot and sun damage (the fiber is UV-resistant.) The best polypropylene rugs are tightly looped (making them less susceptible to oil and grease stains). Other materials, such as nylon and man-made silk, are also sometimes used to create outdoor rugs, but the former is less comfortable underfoot, and the latter not as durable as polypropylene.

Choosing The Outdoor Rug For You
After carefully measuring the space you wish to cover, consider the shape and color you’d like. Outdoor rugs come in square, rectangle, and circular shapes, in rolls up to 12 feet long, and in every stylish color. Consider if you want to delineate the space under your outdoor furniture with a neutral color and understated design or would you prefer to make the rug one of the outdoor room’s focal points and add a big splash of color to coordinate with your throw pillows and accessories?

Perhaps you’d like to have more than one outdoor rug in contrasting colors to set off the bar and dining areas? (Remember to avoid the space right under the grill or kitchen prep area so as not to stain the rugs with grease, though you may want to lay some industrial rubber mats in that area to spare the cook’s feet and to help avoid slippage.) One other area to consider, put an outdoor carpet at each doorway to absorb moisture and dirt before it tracks on to your expensive Oriental indoor rugs or carpeting.
