Barefoot Elegance : A Composition of Coastal Elements

The Florida coastal style is epitomized in this Anna Maria Island home. Historical architecture is adapted to the tropical climate and demands of modern living. The traditional exterior welcomes family and visitors alike to the beach, and a casual yet sophisticated lifestyle.

Architect Allison Kaffka partnered with Whitehead Construction on this project. She explains, “The client’s, the builder’s, and my ideas merged seamlessly on this project to create a residence that allows space for family activities, recreation, guests, and quiet relaxation.” Whitehead adds, “We are blessed to have customers who are willing to let us build what is so important to them.”

Each family member’s room looks out on a direct view of the Gulf with a calm sense of place amidst the lively energy of family life. “When you step inside the beachfront residence, you are immediately welcomed by the simplistic charm of the color palette,” notes interior Designer Gail Carlson of Studio G Home. “Oyster white and warm neutrals inspire a coastal setting that’s calm and comfortable. While surrounded by traditional yet classic architectural elements, interior spaces flow with ease and create a sense of relaxation and hint of barefoot elegance.”

The three-story residence is spread over two Gulf-front properties that were combined to create a 1.34-acre plot. The home includes five bedrooms, five full- and one half-baths. The ground level consists of the entry foyer, stairs, elevator, a three-car garage, and storage for beach equipment. At the rear, a large recreation lanai spreads out adjacent to the pool and spa.

The second floor houses a great room comprising of living, dining, and kitchen areas. An additional butler’s pantry, food pantry, and laundry are just beyond the kitchen. The sunroom, off a large covered porch and open sun deck, overlooks the multiple water views of pool and Gulf. The master suite on this level is tucked to the side and is approached via a hallway behind the sunroom.

The third level, or “second living space,” as it is called, contains four additional suites, and a secondary living or family room.

The façade of this large home is a judicious mix of openings that symmetrically line each floor. Andersen Stormwatch windows are used along with transoms, casements, and picture windows to create an eclectic mix.

The 100-by-25-foot front courtyard is matched by the size of the rear lawn, which is approximately 100-by-15 feet. Glacier colored Tremron pavers in Olde Town design cover the entire approach. The stucco façade at ground level, the Hardie shakes of the second and third stories, and the powder-coated aluminum exterior railings are all cloaked in Sherwin-Williams Extra White, while the trim sports Benjamin Moore Vapor Trails. The second floor balcony wraps around the corner above the entry mahogany front door entry.

A coffered, tongue-and-groove ceiling and woodwork in Benjamin Moore White Heron define the great room. The Century Furniture sectional and occasional chairs in linen-cotton are accented with textured pillows with mother-of-pearl buttons. A sliding white marble waterfall table layers over the charcoal tufted-leather ottoman with exposed nail-head trim. Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring in Lancaster European white oak is from La Casa Tile. A hand-made oyster-shell and crystal-drop, candelabra-style chandelier coordinates with the antique mirror-paneled TV console.

The panoramic Gulf vista shimmers through windows framed in draperies of Jane Churchill linen-colored cotton embroidered in white, and touched with oyster, taupe, and marble fabricated by Beginning to End Interiors. A white beaded chandelier with jute accent bands and tassel dominates the 8-seater, hand-carved, oak dining table. Crushed velvet slip-covers clothe the host and hostess chairs. Side chairs are in charcoal leather and wood, painted, and wax-finished in marble. Ottomans upholstered in woven, textured fabric are fitted with casters, and the flip-top console table, cater to large gatherings.

Old German glass-and-wood-paneled doors frame the range hood. The Calacatta Gold marble on the island from La Casa Tile carries into the full backsplash. Lighting reminiscent of ship’s lanterns glows over the Rohl apron front fireclay sink and polished chrome faucet from The Plumbing Place. Backless oval, swivel stools with smoky leather seats and decorative nail-head trim line the island front. Custom slate-colored iron railings along the main entry stairway connect all floors.

This charming, feminine bedroom is situated on the second living level. Six-inch tongue-and-groove is used for wainscoting and ceiling detail. Expansive panoramic windows with motorized shades highlight the Gulf view. Sleek nightstands, make-up vanity, stool, and an unusual semi-circular bench at the foot of the bed contribute to the delicate ambience. An Egyptian cotton duvet, chunky throw with large, braided tassels, and pillows in antique linen and velvet complement the taupe, blue, and off white hues of the rug. A pair of stacked-ball lamp bases decorates the nightstands and provides a touch of playfulness.

Agreeable Grey paintwork, Calacatta porcelain tiles, Rohl hardware from The Plumbing Place, and beveled inset mirrors make their reappearance, but are augmented by touches of whimsy and flair. Brookhaven Nordic White painted Maple cabinetry from Epoch Solutions is lightened by antique-mirrored “X” mullion panels with crushed mother-of-pearl hardware.

Adjoining the covered porch and open wrap-around sun deck, and overlooking the north-west view of the beach, this lounge space lies directly off the dining area of the great room. The large lanai paved in Shell Reef is framed by four arches, the last connecting to the front entry foyer. Outdoor white aluminum Century furniture with Sunbrella fabric is a collection of daybed, swivel rockers, and side tables. In the foreground, the pool is designed with symmetry to the home, centering on the spa and reflecting the divisions of the lanai structure.
