A Transitional Flair

Leave it to Robb & Stucky to flawlessly blend contemporary transitional elements with Mad Men 1950s chic, only to garner themselves a 2009 Sand Dollar Award for their work at the Sea Pines model at the Classics at Lely Resort. The single-family home, built by Stock Development, features 3,600 square feet of living space, three bedrooms and a cabana.

Robb & Stucky interior designer Donna Grose and design consultant Susie Petril wanted something a bit different for the Sea Pines model and designed an interior with a retro coastal flair defined by a palette of soft gray, ivory and blue, clean lines, monochromatic accessories and more than a touch of old Hollywood glamour.

Enter the stunning living room, with its lush, golf course views, and you’ll see that Grose and Petril achieved their aim. A symmetrical layout and furnishings arranged in pairs instantly lend the space a 50s feel. A monochromatic wood application featuring squares and circles makes a statement on one wall and complements the double step tray ceiling finished in vapor blue paint. The two ice blue velvet armless sofas are separated by a pair of cocktail tables, which have chrome bases and sleek hardwood tops. Behind each sofa stands a narrow Robb & Stucky original console whose driftwood-finished top lends an Asian flair.

Atop the tables are chrome-based lamps with square shades. Bold aqua and white drapery panels, and an aqua and white nylon loop rug with a sculptured border adds softness to the space. To the right, a wet bar also serves the dining and family rooms. Bold monochromatic accessories such as the large white Asian sculpture on the table in front of the windows, and a black and white photo of Audrey Hepburn, complete the look.

In the dining room, the rear wall makes an impact with mirrors and substantial wood moulding painted a clean white that contrasts perfectly with the vapor blue wall color. Below the mirrors the clever inclusion of a shelf allows for the display of Robb & Stucky accessories.

The clean lines of the wood dining table base are paired with a rectangular glass top and accompanied by a novel conversation bench upholstered in a soft stripe that offsets the neutral fabric on the four armless dining chairs. Above the table, the light fixture features a rectangular linen shade.

Four dining chairs with gently curving wooden backs surround a square table in the breakfast nook. Framed abstract artwork and a decorative vase with a simple arrangement keep the look clean and minimal.

The adjacent family room offers views of the outdoor living area and pool and features a color palette of warm grays, aqua and white. The generously sized sectional sofa is covered in a neutral linen fabric accented by vibrant aqua pillows, while the artwork, silk-screened oversized botanicals, contrast in khaki and white. The ottoman has been covered in sailcloth with a mitered stripe and stands atop a Siesel rug. Airy drapery panels have silver grommets and the chrome floor lamp, with its three graduated circular shades, gives a nod to the home’s retro flair. Coastal flavor is provided via such accents as the oversized white shell placed on the coffee table.

Put on your apron a lá Laura Petrie and enter the transitional kitchen made for entertaining. Warm walnut cabinets, granite countertops in sea glass hues, and a backsplash featuring mosaic tiles in blue, green, and taupe, make this a dream space for any hostess. Stainless steel appliances and stepped counters at the breakfast bar are the sort of thoughtful appointments appreciated by serious cooks. The lighted upper cabinets, decorative hardwood range hood, and center island prep station give the kitchen an upscale touch.

Large and light, the master bedroom features 12-foot ceilings and an oversized custom headboard upholstered in natural linen. Behind the Robb & Stucky bed, an oil painting depicts a seascape alive with movement and featuring the theme colors of gray, blue and white. With ivory painted faces and campaign style hardware, the walnut night stands hold chrome table lamps with rectangular linen shades that add retro flavor to the space. White linen drapery panels in a horizontal stripe of appliquéd ribbon in ice blue and chocolate brown frame the tall windows. A salon mirror with a silver leaf frame and accessories with clean lines finish the room.

With its rich blue tones, the slate stone surrounding the jetted soaking tub gives the master bath an organic feel. The slate extends onto the floor of the large walk-in shower, complete with high windows affording garden views, and is complemented by the aqua wall paint. Framed black and white photos of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, and the walls of glass block behind the raised tub, give retro dash to this vintage inspired bath.

A tray ceiling with recessed lighting bathes the study in a warm glow that is further reflected by the silver sage paint color on the walls and the rich, walnut hardwood floors. Bookshelves with clean lines and a partner’s desk accompanied by neutrally upholstered seating have been contrasted with bold, white accessories.

When it’s time for the party to move outdoors, nothing could be more inviting than the covered lanai with its decorative brick pavers and outdoor grilling area. Cool and shady, the space offers a comfortable conversation area with a cast aluminum cocktail table and four chairs, the deep seats of which have been upholstered in aqua green indoor/outdoor fabric. Above, a paddle fan hanging from a richly-detailed coffered ceiling, provides balmy breezes. The cobalt blue tile border around the pool sparkles in the sun, while the fountain at the rear of the pool fills the space with the soothing sound of falling water. Comfortable seating and greenery make the pool area even more inviting.

Once again, Robb & Stucky Interiors has designed a stand out model that is both impressive and inviting. Easy livability and hip retro details, combined with transitional elegance, make the Sea Pines model at Lely Classics one “cool pad”.
