The
Mallana: A Place of Many Trees
Surrounded by a wealth of protected wetlands
and Australian pine and American Oak trees, this sprawling home, with
its rustic exterior colors and copious fieldstone accents, evokes the
large ranch homes typically seen in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado.
Built by John Cannon Homes, Inc. of Sarasota, The Mallana model –
named for the Aboriginal word meaning “a place of many trees”
– is perfectly situated on a three-acre homesite in The Forest at
Hi Hat Ranch.
The first impression of the home is one of awe as a pair of honey-stained
mahogany French doors open up onto the spacious two-story foyer and living
room.
Wide-planked hickory wood flooring, stained a rich shade of bronze, cover
all of the common area floors on the first level. Wide thresholds made
of vintage Virginia oak help to separate and define each room’s
distinct purpose and spatiality.
To the left of the foyer is the library, followed by a small vestibule,
which leads to the generously sized master suite. Matching oversized windows,
and corresponding transoms, flank either side of the bed. Walls painted
a delicately blended shade of moss green further enhance the room’s
ambience creating an interior space that appears to be part of the ensuing
forest of moss-draped oak trees.
Passing by a huge his-and-hers walk-in closet on the right, a hallway
leads to the fantastically appointed master bath. A pillow-topped tub
sits in the middle of the room, surrounded by a tub deck of Rosso Damasco
granite, which was also used on the two vanity countertops. Basket weave
tile insets, framed by the same russet-hued granite, enhance the tub surround
and add interest to the room.
The focal point of the room is the large double-entry shower, which is
visible through a three-panel mitered glass wall behind the tub. A wall
of horizontally cut cypress fieldstone – the same stone used on
the home’s exterior detailing – accentuates the shower.
Just like a mountainside ranch, this home is all about the views and the
natural flow between the interior and exterior spaces. The transition
between the living room, with its voluminous ceiling, and the outdoors
is seamless. Outside, myriad pilasters support several covered lanais,
creating a sensational outdoor living space.
In the living room, precise architectural detailing references the Arts
and Crafts movement. Extensive crown moulding, decorative wood banding
above the sliding glass doors and corresponding transom windows, as well
as a linear wall design of vertical and horizontal millwork all serve
to reinforce the design premise.
The centerpiece of the impressive two-story dining area is the deep-set
wall niche, which is enhanced with a combination of cypress ledgestone
and fieldstone accents. The niche introduces a design element typically
found in a rustic ranch house setting.
A butler’s pantry, with an adjacent wine room, joins the living
and dining rooms to the kitchen and family room.
Architectural details abound in the tremendous family room and adjoining
breakfast area. Above, a crowned tray ceiling gives way to a crowned and
beamed coffered ceiling, which is reminiscent of a rustic ranch house.
On one wall, a rustic-looking, custom designed built-in houses a large
plasma television, gas fireplace and countless bookshelves and storage
cabinets. Knotty maple cabinets, stained in a deep shade of honey, complement
the surrounding cypress fieldstone elements.
A band of crown moulding encircles the room, thus bringing the overall
height of the room down to a more intimate proportion. Two matching, arched
niches were built above the cornice – one above the custom built-in
and one on the opposite wall – to enhance the wide-open second story
wall space.
No expense was spared when designing the European styled kitchen. Honey-stained,
tongue and groove maple cabinets, a full Viking stainless appliance package
and expansive counter space, including a large center island and a second,
elevated teak high bar, are just a few of the kitchen’s spectacular
accouterments.
A hallway leading to the second floor staircase, as well as to the two
first floor guest rooms and private baths is just beyond the family room
and kitchen. One guest room doubles as a cabana, opening up onto the lanai
through a series of sliding glass doors, further strengthening the relationship
between the interior and exterior spaces.
The second story, with its bridged loft and open-spaced game room, is
airy and wide open. The larger bedroom, which has been designed as a study,
opens onto a covered balcony through a wall of sliding glass doors.
