Plantation Style

Today’s baby boomers and empty nesters who are opting to downsize from their previous family home into smaller villas are often faced with a design challenge when dealing with smaller spaces. Siesta Interiors of Sarasota has created a tropical plantation style retreat in the Coventry model at the Villas at Turnberry Trace, a Premier Communities Inc. development in North Port. This beautiful 1,451 square foot villa is the perfect size for the empty nesters or for use as a second home.

The foyer opens into the great room that is painted a sumptuous yellow. Rich, dark 42-inch cabinets, accented with beaded crown mouldings play up the height of the ceiling. Stainless steel appliances lend a clean line to the kitchen, while wrought iron accessories evoke the plantation feel. Burnished metal and glass pendent lighting offers a visual separation between the kitchen and the living area. Neutral, solid surface countertops brighten the kitchen while having the added bonus of making clean-up a breeze. Stainless steel drawer and cabinet pulls echo the appliances pulling the kitchen together.

The living area continues the plantation style décor with a rounded, inlaid wood occasional table and two matching end tables. The comfortable, neutral toned sofa is the perfect foil for the red and green plaid throw pillows. A matching club chair upholstered in rich red and green plaid provides extra seating and it accented with a floral pillow. Dark metal finials, adorned with floral tab draperies, frame the triple windows that let in natural light. Green silk plants in wicker baskets and landscape prints tie in to the plantation theme. A black, wood credenza provides ample storage space for electronic components for the latest in television technology, the flat screen television. A flat screen television is perfect for villa living, as it does not take up any additional floor space, a must when space is at a premium.

The dining room evokes memories of a Southern restaurant with a square wooden table that can be expanded if needed, and four spindle chairs. By choosing two chairs in black lacquer and two chairs in a rich brown stain, Siesta Interiors compliments the top of the table in brown and the rounded legs in black. A matching sideboard is the perfect addition for storage and sets off the oval mirror that bounces light throughout the space making the Great Room appear larger. Floral print tab draperies are swept back with black metal hooks. The wrought iron chandelier with sconces continues the low country theme. Dick June, owner of Siesta Interiors, places a yellow urn with tropical plants to compliment the ongoing yellow décor.

The cozy den off the living area is perfect for the golfer of the house. Cream baseboards mimic the five-inch crown moulding along the ceiling, framing dark hardwood flooring that is complimented by a beige sisal rug. A green and rust-striped love seat provides extra seating, while a freeform wood table is the perfect space to show off golfing trophies. A self-contained computer armoire houses a flat-screen monitor and peripherals that are hidden from view, once the double doors are shut.

The master retreat is a homeowner’s dream. Siesta Interiors has designed the suite to be a tranquil haven for the homeowner, a place to relax, read a book or just enjoy the lovely Florida view. A black iron spindle bed is covered in a luxurious red and green plaid duvet and a black dust ruffle that shows off a floral motif. Beautiful tab draperies accent the master bedroom window that overlooks the lanai and back yard. Silver framed prints hang on the warm yellow walls. Two small lamps rest on beautiful curved nightstands casting a warm glow throughout the room. A matching dresser shows off brushed silver drawer pulls.

The master bathroom is papered in bold black and floral wallpaper that complements the bed coverings. His-and-hers sinks are separated by a solid surface vanity, and the cabinets are accented with carved rope detail. The bathroom has a large walk-in shower that shows off beautiful accent tile.

The guest bedroom is elegant, but comfortable. A striped, silk covered, padded headboard nicely compliments the green and yellow walls. Two freestanding floor lamps with cream shades provide ample lighting. Gold, green and yellow accent pillows mesh nicely with the colors in the painting over the bed and the valance over the blinds. The cream waffle weave bedspread gives the room a casual, tropical feel. A pale yellow upholstered chair makes an excellent reading area, perfect after a long day of sight-seeing. Siesta Interiors has put a completely different spin on tropical design and décor. Instead of bold, art deco colors often associated with Florida decor, the use of dark, rich wood tones accented with black wrought iron and lush native plants, gives the home a warm inviting and relax atmosphere.
