Not
Just a Furniture Store
When most of us think of imported Asian furniture,
we have the misconception that Asian furniture is the stereotypical black
lacquer furniture that was so popular in the 1980s. Chris and DeNise Ash,
the owners of Asian Imports, have set out to prove that the stereotype
is false.
Walking into Asian Imports, located off University Parkway in University
Center, is like walking into a Zen garden. Soothing music plays and water
fountains provide a tranquil background, while colorful silk lanterns
dangle from the ceiling, making for a most relaxing shopping experience.
Chris and DeNise started Asian Imports three years ago with one container
of antiques that had been shipped over by DeNise’s brother, who
lives in Asia. Today, Asian Imports sells furniture and accessories from
all over Asia including Thailand, India, Indonesia, Tibet, Vietnam, Bali,
Japan, and China. No longer focusing only on antiques, Asian Imports brings
in modern pieces as well as accessories and gifts.
When asked what a popular seller is, DeNise replies “Our teak furniture
is popular because it can go outside. In Florida, the lanai is an extension
of the living space. We specialize in pieces that are unique. We also
try and choose neutral pieces that will mix well with any décor.”
She continues, “You can definitely find a nice gift here. One of
our most popular items are our hollow candles, which come in a variety
of shapes and colors. The hollow candles are the perfect gift for someone
that has everything. They are beautiful and, with proper care, they will
last forever. We are the exclusive retailer on Florida’s west coast
for the hollow candles.”
Asian Imports constantly receives new merchandise and the owners devote
much time to find unique items.
“Several of our customers come in frequently to see new items because
they know that it is not always possible for us to get multiples. Many
of our items are one-of-a-kind and handmade. By preference, we work with
several small distributors,” says DeNise. “We believe this
has helped us to be successful in finding unique items. The staff at Asian
Imports is very helpful. As they get to know our customers, they will
call to let them know that an item has come in that they may be interested
in.” Asian Imports is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am
to 6:00 pm and on Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.
