Soothing Waters

Leave the stress of the world behind with an enchanted lagoon - in your own backyard. Let Lucas Lagoons take you there.

The owner of Lucas Lagoons, Inc., Lucas Congdon, moved to Sarasota more than six years ago, leaving the mountains of Vermont behind. Yet the mountain influence still shows clearly in his work. His designs have been featured in Sarasota Magazine, SRQ, Home and Garden, Housetrends and The Sarasota Herald Tribune. The company is the winner of the 2003 Sarasota County Beautification Award.

Lucas uses about 60 tons of Tennessee river rock in each lagoon. Most lagoons begin with a free-form pool shell to which rock walls, planters and at least one waterfall are added. And, not just any rocks will do.  Once a month Lucas heads up to the Tennessee Mountains to hand-select his stone. “These rocks have been aged in the woods and mountain streams, and are often still covered with moss and lichen. And, just like any natural stone, they will get even more beautiful with time,” Lucas says.

Such perfection is demonstrated in all facets of the lagoon-even the water that fills it. The lagoon’s water supports aquatic plants, is crystal-clear and completely potable. It is purified with a copper-silver ionization system.

Lucas never builds the same lagoon twice. Every project is unique. “I work to make it look as if the lagoon existed first, and the home was built around it,” Lucas explains. “I make the back of the waterfall as beautiful as the front. Attention to detail is everything.”

Lucas undertakes only 12 to 20 projects a year. Every Lucas Lagoon is both beautiful and utilitarian, combining the natural beauty of Lucas’ designs with the desire of his clients to have a functional living space. The Lucas Lagoons’ construction team works on only one to two projects at a time, and usually completes a project within eight weeks.

The focus and hands-on involvement Lucas contributes through the entire project, from conception to completion, really pays off. “The final comment from delighted customers is always the same, he says. “ I never dreamed anything could be this beautiful.”

Lucas Lagoons may be found in both Sarasota and Manatee counties, in The Oaks, Gator Creek, Siesta Key, Heron Lake, Prestancia, Greyhawk Landing, Lakewood Ranch and Mill Creek.

The starting price for a Lucas Lagoon is approximately $150,000. A recently-introduced pool division offers simpler pool designs with limited rockwork. These pools’ prices start at about $50,000.
