From The Ground Up
With a college degree in one hand and a shovel in the other, owner of
Bay Builders, Joshua J. Tuyls learned, from the ground up, how home improvements
should
be completed.
“When I graduated in 1989 from the University of Central Florida
with a business degree, the last thing I imagined was digging footings
and pouring concrete as a means to making a living. After perfecting
this trade for about two years, my father and mentor, Robert Tuyls promoted
me to the framing crew. From there, I moved quickly through the trades
and learned the business from a ‘hands-on perspective,’”
says Joshua.
He continues, “At the time, I did not understand why my father was
training me in this manner, but later in my career it became clear that
this type of knowledge is what separates us from our competition. The
ability to blend our construction knowledge with the operational side
of this industry makes for a sound and lasting business plan.”
From early on, it became quite apparent to Joshua and his father, Robert
Tuyls, that forming a quality driven remodeling company would be the appropriate
niche. Bay Builders has successfully grown to become one of the largest
remodeling companies in the area, as recognized by the Qualified Remodelors
Top 500 List.
The Process
Bay Builders has successfully formed a full-service remodeling firm. Their
staff includes a myriad of talents, from designers to master craftsmen,
with over 35 years of carpentry experience.
“We found the traditional practices of any building process brought
on a lot of unnecessary stress to the homeowner. Our approach to each
project is to guide our customers from inception to completion,”
says Joshua. Bay Builders works closely with each of their clients, guiding
them through the design stage and material selections process, all of
the way through to the construction phase and final completion of the
project.
“Listening to our clients and understanding their personal needs,
allows us to provide well designed spaces that flow naturally,”
says Beth Ann Tuyls, Bay Builders design coordinator.
Affiliations
Over the past several decades, Bay Builders has been able to assemble
a list of quality oriented suppliers andsubcontractors. “You’re
only as good as your weakest link,” says Joshua. Aligning yourself
with suppliers that compliment your business style is important in providing
a quality product. Your average homebuilder typically does not have the
expertise in remodeling to successfully avoid the potential pitfalls. Bay
Builders has a long and dedicated list of subcontractors that follow us
through each project. “They learn and understand our tolerances
and quality expectations,” says Jerry Kublick Jr., Bay Builders
field superintendent.
Achieving Our Goals Together
Over the years, our clients have become a part of our extended family. Most
become life-long friends, or at a minimum, repeat customers. Bay
Builders has been able to assemble hundreds of photographs that show our
past projects, and have received many letters of recommendation from various
communities. Bay Builders is also very proud to have been a charter member
of the Collier Building Industry Association Remodelors Council.
Our Community
Being active in your community is an important part of understanding how
neighborhoods are changing,” says Joshua. Keeping an eye on
local government and building codes is a full-time challenge. Bay
Builders holds a State of Florida Certified General Contractors license
and is fully insured with coverage in excess of $2,000,000. We are proof
that a locally-owned business in today’s climate can survive.
“We pay all of our taxes and insurance premiums and still manage
to exist in today’s competitive world,” says Micah Tuyls,
Bay Builders operations manager.
Bay Builders routinely donates used appliances and building materials
to local charities and to families in need. There is never a charge,
but we are always paid with smiles and blessings. Bay Builders has
donated time to the Sheppard’s Program, Immokalee Friendship House
and many local charities.
Our Next Generation
As residents of Southwest Florida for over 31 years, our family has seen
a lot of changes in the area. We continue to evolve as a company
and grow around good staff and sound business practices. The next generation
of Tuyls remodelors are in training (ok, diapers), but rest assured the
tradition of quality and design will continue. Remodeling with innovation
is truly our calling card.
