On The Family McDonald succeeded beyond her clients’ wildest expectations. To a base palette of earth tones (beige, cream, caramel, taupe and chocolate), she added accents of gold, green, persimmon and black to make the décor of this Mediterranean style home “pop”. The entry sets the tone. Double mahogany doors open to an elegant foyer where cream flooring with a black and rojo-alicante marble border suggests a welcoming carpet. The foyer leads into a magnificent living room where a plush seating arrangement of creamy upholstered sofas and lounge chairs with contrasting dark wood trim are complemented by marble-top tables with metal bases. The focal point of the living room is a hand-blown glass sculpture, designed by McDonald and produced by glass artist Beverly Albrets of Tropical Glass Design. Each piece was individually created and mounted in an alcove with lighting added to accentuate the flowing shapes and rich colors of this unique sculpture. Over the sofa is an interesting piece of abstract art comprised of nine squares, each featuring a different texture and geometric pattern. Above the glass doors is an eye-catching ironwork panel with scroll motif. This original piece was designed, at the clients’ request, based on the scroll motif of the living room console. The dining room features a striking recessed arch with beveled diamond mirror panels, creating a dramatic focal point that enhances and enlarges this elegant setting. The kitchen boasts rich dark wood cabinets, abundant recessed lighting and every modern appliance a gourmet cook might desire. In addition, the space has been individualized with interesting accents such as the faux finish treatment of the tray ceiling and a decorative ironwork grille above the cook top that adds dimension to the stone backsplash. Conveniently located next to the kitchen, the family room offers a delightful casual living area for family enjoyment and entertainment. Complete with wide screen TV, entertainment center and generous seating arrangement, this room also affords a glorious panoramic view of the pool, spacious lanai area and lake beyond. Adjoining the family room is a cozy game room where bamboo chairs around a wooden game table provide the perfect setting for a family games evening. The combination of plantation shutters, built-in bookcases, textured grasscloth, ceiling paddle fan and warm tones of the furnishings create a relaxed tropical ambiance. A comfortable guest bedroom with soft green walls is located at this end of the house. The bay window has plantation shutters above an upholstered window seat and the impressive sleigh bed offers a modern twist with upholstered headboard and footboard and contrasting dark wood trim. Although a small space, the powder bath is packed with decorative punch including an arched mirror with overlay metalwork and multi-tone mosaic tile floor reflected in the backsplash. An unusual oval stone sink rests on a medium-tone wood vanity and old fashion plumbing fixtures add interest. The use of mirrors and the softly textured leaf wallpaper brighten and open up this space. Across from the living room, French doors lead into the his-and-hers library, where the walls are painted vibrant persimmon. In contrast are the light cream color arched plantation shutters, built-in bookcases and crown moulding used to highlight the layered tray ceiling. An impressive partner’s desk defines the work area, while the artwork, bamboo flooring and unusual accessories provide interesting Oriental accents. The piece de resistance of this residence is beyond question the master suite. Here elements of distinction and romance are beautifully blended, culminating in a space that no homeowner would want to leave. The stunning tray ceiling has been finished with gold and silver metallic faux presenting a rich, shimmering texture that sets off the furnishings. The king-size bed features ornate metal headboard and footboard with accents of gold leaf and the elegant custom bedding and drapery panels present an array of gold and bronze silks. Through an archway, the master suite extends to a private sitting room. This restful retreat, furnished with lounge chairs and ottomans, looks out over the lanai area and includes a cedar sauna for further relaxation. Classic elements of the spacious master bath have been designed for both convenience and elegance. There is a large walk-in shower and bathtub. The marble vanities have mirrors along the entire wall and this space has been accessorized with exotic touches of bamboo, refreshing florals and seashells. On the lanai, McDonald has created four separate seating areas to maximize use of this space. Guests can comfortably relax in the sun or in the shade of umbrella-covered tables, enjoy outdoor dining or gather in front of the cozy fireplace. In the background are the swimming pool with infinity edge and a beautifully landscaped raised spa. Jinx McDonald, through her careful use of indoor and outdoor spaces, inviting color palette and creative blending of furnishings, has produced for her clients a combination of luxury, sophistication and comfort ideally suited to Florida’s climate and lifestyle. This is what she often refers to as “the art of tropical living”.
