Lovelier The Second Time Around

For 15 years, Paul Erwin Kollegger has been leading his company, Paul Erwin Design, Inc., to turn woodworking dreams - from design and custom millwork - into reality. With 30 years experience, he understands the need for custom design in woodworking projects ranging from the traditional to contemporary, from architectural detail to furniture. The signature touch of the company is to have clients involved each step of the way.

Being the complete source for builders, homeowners and interior designers - from concept to completion – has created a natural transition into the fastest growth segment of Lee and Collier Counties’ evolving building industry: remodels.

Perhaps the clearest example of the practical nature of this remodel trend is found incondominium residences. Many high-rise homes, built in the 1970s and 1980s, are situated in fantastic locations, but lack the open feel of Florida design. New technology and innovations in everything from lighting design to windows, window treatments and appliances make it possible for confining spaces to be liberated at the same time dated cabinetry and countertops are replaced.

Once such project came about in the Marco Island high-rise residence of Rod and Carol Thole. The couple bought their Florida home five years ago after falling in love with the waterfront setting. Built in the early-‘80s, the home desperately needed a facelift, but they
understood its potential.

The Tholes lived in the 2,500 square-foot residence long enough to understand what it needed, and then began interviewing builders and trades professionals.

“We brought Paul in and asked him for his idea of what would open our home up and give it warmth,” Rod explains. “We liked his sketches, which gave us a modern-day design without a modern-day look.”

Most rooms in the three-bedroom home were transformed during the remodel. The foyer, often a cramped space in a condominium, was enlarged when its dropped ceiling was removed and recessed lighting was added.

Throughout the home, walls were knocked out to open spaces and improve traffic patterns. Ceiling treatments added character. In place of dropped ceilings in the living room, custom beams with built-in bullet lights add interest without taking up space.
In the dining room, a multi-level ceiling with concealed lighting adds drama.

“We didn’t want a chandelier in the dining room because we didn’t want to obstruct the view,” recalls Rod. “Paul was able to select focused recessed lights, which are on dimmers.”

Throughout the home, natural wood cabinetry and crown moulding add warmth. Granite countertops are stunning. In the library, a computer behind cabinetry doors is concealed when guests arrive. In the family room, a widescreen TV has been incorporated into custom cabinetry.

Homeowners often remark that they’re happier with the results of remodels than they are with new home construction, perhaps because of the high level of personal involvement.

The Thole’s remodel is a good example of the work of Paul Erwin Design, a company that has grown with our evolving marketplace. Certainly not a typical cabinetry company, Paul Erwin Design is not a typical kitchen and bath company either. While a general contractor was brought in to oversee the Thole’s project, the design and fine craftsmanship were crucial. Today, Golden Proportions Design, G.C., a Paul Erwin Design, Inc. affiliate, completes the company’s mission to be a full-service destination for world-class home remodels.

The Tholes always considered their Marco Island residence to be a dream come true because of its waterfront location. Now they sit back and enjoy their home’s design just as much as its spectacular view.

“I know I sound boastful, but I’m really proud of what Paul Erwin did,” says Rod Thole. “He came up with a great plan and the three of us were in sync every step of the way. We are really happy with everything.”
