A Key West Flavor

Located on Siesta Key, a barrier island eight miles long in the Gulf of Mexico, it’s no surprise that this home built by Voigt Building and Design was given a Key West flavor. The stunning two-story residence features a sweeping entry staircase that leads to a wide and welcoming front porch, incorporating such native materials as a shell stone floor with a cypress pine beam ceiling above. The impressive front entry doors, measuring seven-feet-wide together, are also made of cypress and are embellished with a cypress-arched surround. Brick pavers line the entry drive and the generous use of high impact Pella windows gives the home a distinctive look. Mature landscaping, including a foliage island located at the front of the home in the driveway, adds further character, as does the clever use of both landscape and architectural lighting.

The unique residence offers 6,000 square feet of living space under air and features five bedrooms, five-and-a-half baths, a billiard room with wet bar, a home office, a children’s playroom, children’s rooms with play lofts built above the closets and bathrooms and a four-car garage.

Visitors are welcomed into the 22-foot-high foyer, where walls painted in a soft yellow cream perfectly complement the golden tones of the travertine marble floor which has been laid in 24-inch square tiles. Set into the stone is a custom hand-laid wood medallion that incorporates various species of wood including mahogany, walnut and curly maple woods. The family’s antique hat rack, placed by the stairs, brings further wood elements into the foyer, while the soffitt above the double entry doors provides a display shelf and lends additional visual interest to the space. The staircase boasts wrought-iron banisters and natural wood risers.

The gold travertine flooring is continued in the formal dining room, which is located just off the entry foyer. Here, rich burgundy walls provide contrast to the crisp white paint on the millwork throughout the room, including the crown moulding and the soft arches at the top of the dining room windows, which mimic the arch at the front entry doors. The Georgian lines of the round dining room table are complemented by the dining chairs with their spider web backs and by the sleigh bench that stands before the window. A round oriental area rug anchors the space and also lends visual interest, while pulling the wall color into its design. The family’s heirloom birdcage graces one corner of the room. Above the dining table, a six-armed brass chandelier drips with crystal embellishments and, in addition to the recessed can lights, provides lighting for the room.

Also located off of the entry foyer, the billiard room offers a place to both play pool and entertain guests. Its yellow walls provide the perfect contrast to the stained maple wainscoting which runs the perimeter of the room. A custom-built maple wet bar has been given raised panel details at the front and a Galaxy black granite countertop. Additional wall cabinets provide bar storage. The bar stools at the front of the bar are repeated elsewhere in the room along the length of the shelf which runs the perimeter of the room and offers a place to put glasses when it’s time to sink the next shot. Pendant lights with gold glass shades hang above the bar, while a flat screen television has been mounted on a side wall.

In the adjacent powder bath, multiple hues of natural slate tiles cover the walls and are embellished with a custom mosaic border. The hand-painted blue glass sink features a charming underwater scene that incorporates colorful fish, while the ornate wall mirror that hangs above the vanity reflects the natural tones of the oil rubbed bronze fixtures that have been set into the wall above the basin.

With its Old World feel, the parlor looks as though it’s been lifted straight out of an English country manor. Here, the golden travertine floors provide contrast for the stained maple paneling that covers the rest of the room entirely, from the coffered ceiling to the four walls. Built-in bookcases and display shelves are lit by strategicall-placed recessed lighting. The antique coffee table features a mosaic top and the couch, with its rustic wooden frame, has been upholstered in a rich rust fabric. The animal print on the armchair gives the space a whimsical touch, while the baby grand piano adds its own touch of elegance. Multi-paned windows offer views to the front of the home, while the distinctive maple gas-burning fireplace boasts a mantle supported by decorative carved corbels.

The gourmet kitchen was given a crisp, clean look through the use of white beaded face frame cabinets and cool yellow paint on the walls. In contrast, the center island cabinetry was given a distressed finish by applying a coastal blue finish atop a red basecoat. The island is fitted with a single bowl farm sink and Kitchen Aid dishwasher drawers. The remaining stainless steel appliances are from GE MonogramTM. The counter tops are Labradorite blue, a mineral that contains huge chunks of color that flash and change shades depending on the lighting angle and the position from which it’s viewed. The kitchen also boasts a dual farm sink and Australian cypress floors. The charm of the space continues with the additions of a hammered tin backsplash and a Tiffany-style stained glass chandelier above the island.

Through the doorway just visible beside the wall oven is a generous 12 x 12 room which serves as a pantry and also contains a desk, a second refrigerator and a washer and dryer in addition to those located in the main utility room on the second floor.

The master bedroom has been given a truly coastal feel with sea blue walls contrasted by white crown moulding and a coffered ceiling accented with cove lighting. The four-poster bed displays turned posts with decorative finish details and has been covered in with a duvet in a muted striped fabric. Woven rattan shades at the windows continue the airy feel of the space, while an arch and knee wall separate the sleeping from the sitting area. Here, an overstuffed blue love seat sits across from an armchair and ottoman upholstered in a deeper shade of blue. A white wooden coffee table reconfirms the nautical feel of the space, which leads out to a second floor porch that overlooks the pool area below.

At the back, a porch runs the length of the home and contains a full outdoor kitchen. A generous seating area boasts a fireplace and offers views to the pool area below, where the pool deck is paved with tumbled travertine stone. A decorative stone waterfall provides visual appeal, as well as the relaxing sound of running water. At the shallow end of the pool, which measures a foot deep, stepping stones have been provided for the children, while decorative bubblers provide an amusing addition for little swimmers.

With its full set of features geared towards family life, the Voigt Building and Design home on Siesta Key is certainly child-friendly. At the same time, its gracious appointments insure that it will also be viewed as an elegant setting for both entertaining and gracious living.
